Anxiety
Anxiety disorders involve recurring and chronic states of fear, worry, and apprehension, which hugely interfere with a person’s ability to live a normal life. Types of anxiety disorders include; generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. For a person struggling with anxiety, the world can seem like a very fearful place. Despite non-stressful circumstances, the exaggerated negative feelings surrounding events are continuous, even where no immediate anxiety triggers are prevalent.
Physical Symptoms:
Pounding heart
Sweating
Nausea
Headaches
Stomach upset
Dizziness
Frequent urination/diarrhoea
Chest pain
Shortness of breath

Psychological/Emotive Symptoms:
Concentration/memory difficulties
Distress
Overestimation of threat
Fear of death
Panic
Hypervigilance
Unrealistic sense of danger
Catastrophizing
Helplessness
When the symptoms attached to anxiety increase, the main coping mechanism that people adopt is to avoid situations. Avoidance provides temporary relief, but the fear of a similar situation occurring can have a distressing and debilitating effect. Because of a low stress tolerance, panic or nervousness, the individual will usually experience their social and work performance deteriorate as a result.

Counselling For Anxiety
At Aspects Therapy, our psychotherapists are highly trained to evaluate the contributory factors which lead to the development of anxiety disorders. They are exceptionally skilled in assessing maladaptive thinking patterns and in identifying environmental triggers associated with the problematic symptoms of anxiety. We provide Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for anxiety and have a high success rate in treating the condition.
Clients can learn new coping strategies that alter physiological, psychological and behavioural responses to anxiety. People can take back effective control of their lives and acquire the necessary skills and techniques for dealing with symptom reduction and eliminating the condition completely. In applying a psychodynamic approach to anxiety, our therapists can pinpoint underlying unconscious anxieties in order for clients to take charge of their anxiety and to eradicate symptoms.
Anxiety can have a negative impact on a person’s self-esteem, which may manifest in the form of shyness or social anxiety, and dramatically reduces confidence levels. Given these adverse effects; lost opportunities, substance abuse, health issues, unemployment, or an inability to fulfil work criteria, can be prevalent. In severe cases where stress levels intensify considerably, anxiety can manifest in the form of a panic attack. If untreated, a person suffering from a long-term anxiety disorder may even become suicidal.
